Twinkle Khanna recently opened up about the horrifying rape cases that shook the country. She said that women in India are less scares of ghosts compared to men. Published: August 25, 2024 1:13 PM IST By Edited by Over the past few days, the issue of women’s safety has been raising concerns across the country.

Following the horrifying rape-murder case in Kolkata, people from all walks of life are speaking out. Among them is Bollywood actress Twinkle Khanna, who addressed the matter in her latest column for The Times of India titled “Why Ghosts Don’t Scare the Indian Stree.” Twinkle discussed how women in India are not afraid of ghosts but of men.

She also shared an anecdote from her childhood about one of her aunt’s alleged possessions. Twinkle wrote, “Fifty years on this planet, and I find that we are still teaching our daughters the same things I was taught as a child. Don’t go alone.

To the park, to school, to work. Don’t go alone with any man, even if it’s your uncle, cousin, or friend. Don’t go alone in the morning or evening, and especially not at night.

Don’t go alone because it’s not a matter of if, but when. Don’t go alone because you may never come back.” She concluded, “It is time to ensure that laws are enforced and followed, guaranteeing safety measures for women in public spaces instead of confining us at home.

Till then, I suppose it is safer for the strees (women) of this country to encounter a ghost in a dark alley than a man.” Twinkle suggested that horror movies often fail to capture the true terror of everyday life, such as the horrific crimes that have occurred in cities like Kolkata and Badlapur. Stree 2 stands out by addressing these real-world fears.

Twinkle also wrote that while scary movies can enthral fans, they can also convey social messages to the public. Twinkle left the film industry after a few years, having acted in movies such as Barsaat (1995), for which she won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut, as well as Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai (1998), Seenu (1999), Baadshah (1999), Joru Ka Ghulam (2000), and Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega (2001). Later in 2015, Twinkle published her first non-fiction book, Mrs Funnybones.
