Thiruvananthapuram : In the first case registered for stealing cryptocurrency in the city, Museum police initiated a probe on Sunday as a 64-year-old man’s digital wallet was hacked and crypto coins worth lakhs of rupees were stolen from it by unidentified men. As per the preliminary findings, the digital account of the victim, a resident of Nanthancode, in Trust Wallet was hacked on July 5 this year. On the same day, a crypto coin worth Rs 52,000 was stolen, and days later, on July 21, 46 coins worth lakhs were also stolen.
On Aug 8, the accused again stole 46 coins, and the incident came to light only on Saturday when the victim checked his digital wallet. The hackers stole all the credentials of the account, and the mobile number and email ID of the account were also changed. This prevented the victim from getting notifications, and he was late to identify the theft.
Museum police registered a case on his complaint under section 318 (4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for cheating and sections 43, 66, and 66 (D) of the Information Technology Act. “With the help of cyber police, we held an investigation, and it was found that the digital account was handled by a Kozhikode resident. It was also found that the account was hacked and operated on the devices of Koyilandy natives Sreejith and Sharon.
Since the entire crime took place in Kozhikode, we may transfer the case to the station concerned there for further probe. This was conveyed to the top cops and a decision will be taken accordingly,” said police.
