The TV personality, 53, is taking part in Channel 4 reality programme Celebs Go Dating , after recently splitting from his husband of six years Daniel Lustig . The former couple, who are best known for their time as couch critics before their Gogglebox exit last year , announced they’d ‘grown apart and made the decision to part ways ’.

Stephen, with the support of fans for taking the next step , is now on the hunt for love again, but a recent date has left viewers ‘uncomfortable’. In a clip shared on social media , he is seen on a date with a younger man, talking about football and his sexuality. Not only were viewers left shocked by the age gap, but also Stephen’s behaviour on the date, as he pretended to fall asleep.

‘I came out when I was 18, and that was obviously really, really tough, considering my environment and stuff, but it was the best thing I ever did,’ his date Ben tells him. Stephen replies: ‘The best choice is always the right choice.’ Ben, 22, then carries on talking about how he went to university straight after coming out, to which Stephen pretends to doze off and ‘snores’.

‘You f**king asked,’ Ben hits back with, laughing. Stephen also laughs it off, as his date excuses himself from the table. But viewers were left horrified, with @sharon.

Really don’t like this guy,’ @eyeslikeaqua said, while @honestvibesonly branded the date ‘cringe’. Stephen is taking part in the reality dating series, which also stars Made in Chelsea’s Tristan Phillips, actress Helen Flanagan and MAFS UK’s Ella Morgan.

After announcing he would be a part of the show, Stephen’s fans wished him luck for putting himself back out there , after his split from Daniel. When rumours first started circulating that Stephen had signed up to the reality dating series, his ex-husband Daniel said that he would ‘definitely support him and watch’. Asked by The Sun whether he thought it was ‘too soon’ for his ex to jump back into dating on national TV, he explained they’d been single for around 10 months at that time.

‘He’ll be a very good candidate. He’s got some very very funny stories if he is going on it. I want him to find love again.

We always want our exes and friends to find love and just to be happy,’ he said.
