Summary New Portland International Airport terminal offers improved traveler experience with increased space and modernized security. Enhanced security screening includes advanced technology for easier navigation and more efficient process. The new main terminal at PDX is double in size, inspired by local landscapes, and offers a welcoming design for travelers.

The largest airport in the US state of Oregon, Portland International Airport (PDX) is about to open its revamped main terminal, which will include several new security checkpoints to expedite travelers' arrival. Over 1,000 workers upgraded the terminal space during the reconstruction. Located just six miles from downtown Portland, the airport accounts for 90% of all state passenger traffic and 95% of air cargo, and its ground spans over 3,000 acres.

An improved traveler experience Recent travelers at the airport would agree that transit through the airport over the last few years has been difficult due to a very tight amount of space in the ticket lobby and old security checkpoint. The new space will mitigate this, with a much more expansive space to enhance the traveler experience. During the design phase back in 2015-2016, a big driver was about capacity and ensuring that long wait times were not comparable to other big airports around the country.

Kathleen McDonald, the Federal Security Director for the TSA in Oregon, noted: “The first thing you’re going to see is the automated screen lane that’s going to provide a bin for the traveler to come through. They’ll be able to divest everything and keep everything in their bag which is really important.

“The second piece of technology that’s going to be easier for travelers is our X-ray machine. That is the same equipment that’s used in the medical field, it allows officers to look at images in 3D.” The new security checkpoints are expected to open to the public from next Wednesday, which is also when the new terminal will welcome it's first passengers to and from the new and improved Portland International Airport.

At PDX, the new terminal has drawn inspiration from local lush landscapes and has worked with 11 local forests to supply Douglas fur for the terminal's wooden ceiling. The main terminal is meant to feel like you are walking through the forest, with a wood-lattice ceiling spanning over the bright space with 49 sunbreaks (sky lights).

Inside, there will be a number of leafy trees and plants and a range of new shops and food options. PDX maintains a robust network of domestic destinations across the United States and is a hub for Alaska Airlines . International services are also available, with direct flights to Canada, Mexico, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Iceland.

The city will be the carrier's 55th non-stop destination from Portland..
