The young girl who died following a fall at a hotel on the Spanish island of Majorca has been named locally. The 11-year-old has been named as Clodagh Phelan from Co. Wicklow, a talented GAA and Rugby player.

Clodagh was described as a ‘beautiful, spirited child’ and was a cherished member of Parnell Athletic Club based in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow. Writing on X, Taoiseach Simon Harris said there was so much ‘promise and personality snatched away in a terrible accident.’ ‘So sad to hear of the tragic loss of Clodagh Phelan,’ he wrote.



‘So much promise and personality snatched away in a terrible accident. Thoughts with her family and community at this truly awful time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.

’ In a moving tribute posted online, Parnell Athletic Club stated: ‘Parnell A.C. are truly heartbroken to share the devastating news of the passing of Clodagh Phelan, one of our juvenile athletes and friend to many of our younger athletes.

‘Clodagh was a beautiful, spirited child and a great athlete who excelled in many sports, not just athletics. Her family Valerie, Liam, Will, and David and extended family are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. As a mark of respect and to allow us all time to grieve the loss of Clodagh, there will be no training until further notice.

’ Spanish authorities said on Monday that they are probing the death of a girl overnight on Sunday. The Civil Guard said: ‘The case is being investigated. Guardia Civil received an emergency call after a 12-year-old girl fell in a hotel in Alcudia last night.

‘(Her) parents were sleeping. A hosted person at the hotel reported the emergency at the morning when he found the body. At the moment there is no more public information.

’ The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance..
