LAKE ANDES — A judge has granted a delay in a Lake Andes teenager’s murder and manslaughter trial in connection with an incident earlier this year at a Lake Andes motel. Mackenzie Antelope, 18, has been charged in connection with the May 21 multiple stabbings of two men at the Landing Strip Motel. The alleged altercation in a motel room resulted in the death of one man and serious injuries to another.

Antelope faces charges of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter in the death of Quinlan Ream, 22, of Lake Andes. In addition, the defendant faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon committed against Dylan Oullette, 33, of Lake Andes. Antelope was scheduled for a two-week trial this month, but Lake Andes defense attorney Tim Whalen filed for a continuance for more time to prepare.



The prosecution, handled by the South Dakota Attorney General’s office and the Charles Mix County State’s Attorney, didn’t object to the motion. Judge Bruce Anderson set the new starting date as March 17 at the Charles Mix County Courthouse in Lake Andes. A motions hearing is scheduled for Jan.

15 with a pre-trial conference slated for Feb. 24. Authorities had initially charged Antelope with first-degree murder, which carries a punishment of the death penalty or life imprisonment.

However, the Charles Mix County grand jury indicted the defendant on the other charges. Antelope could still receive a mandatory life sentence on the mur.
