Friday, August 30, 2024 Travelers face hardship on Ernakulam to Bengaluru route with Vande Bharat service suspended, forcing Malayalis to seek costly alternatives for Onam travel. The ongoing travel difficulties faced by rail passengers during the busy Onam season have been compounded by the idling of the Ernakulam – Bengaluru Vande Bharat train at Ernakulam South railway station. As a result, many Keralites living in Bengaluru are forced to spend significant amounts on bus tickets to make their way home for the festive season.

Despite repeated appeals from rail passengers, people’s representatives, and various passengers’ associations to resume the Vande Bharat special service, the authorities have shown little interest in addressing these concerns. The eight-coach Vande Bharat train had been operational until August 26, and although Ernakulam officials initiated preparations for its resumption, higher authorities have yet to make a final decision. In the meantime, bus fares on the Bengaluru – Ernakulam route have soared, with further increases anticipated as demand rises.

In response to the situation, MP Hibi Eden recently called for an inquiry into the sudden suspension of the popular Vande Bharat service, which had been profitable. In his communication to the railway minister, Eden questioned why the authorities were delaying the resumption of the service despite the apparent demand and preparations already underway. He also urged the introduction of special trains to Ernakulam from all major Indian cities to accommodate the surge in travelers.

The abrupt discontinuation of the Vande Bharat service just weeks before Onam has caused considerable inconvenience for passengers planning to travel home to Kerala. Despite some passengers raising concerns about the train’s schedule, the service remained highly popular, with tickets often selling out quickly. With Onam fast approaching, the situation for travelers appears bleak, as most tickets for trains to the southern districts are now on the waiting list.

Passengers continue to plead with the railways to announce special trains well in advance, rather than waiting until the last minute. Kuruvila Mathews, National Kerala Congress state chairman and NDA vice chairman, has echoed these demands, advocating for the permanent establishment of the Ernakulam – Bengaluru Vande Bharat service and calling for an increase in the number of coaches from eight to sixteen. The rising demand for travel options during the Onam season highlights the critical need for efficient and timely transportation services.

The lack of proactive measures from the railway authorities has left many passengers frustrated and without viable options. Restoring the Vande Bharat service and enhancing rail connectivity could provide much-needed relief, ensuring that more travelers can reach their homes comfortably and affordably during this festive time..
