The 'bridge to nothingness' atop the Dachstein glacier When there is no snow, and skiing folk are not everywhere, Salzburg, cute as a button, is an appealing destination before departing the city for a few days of walking in Austria’s pristine countryside. The city centre’s Baroque architecture and its 17th century streets have been lovingly preserved and there is much to see — the cathedral, Mozart’s home, Nonnburg Abbey, where visitors can listen to the nuns singing Gregorian chorals each morning, and the medieval Hohensalzburg Fortress gracing Festungsburg mountain. Many of the sights of the city can be taken in by guided tours and Sound of Music fans can, much to the bemusement of local people, join a morning coach trip around film locations and contribute to renditions of its favourite ditties.
