The landslide, which struck near Dzudza village in Kohima district on Monday, has severely disrupted transportation, effectively isolating Kohima from Dimapur, the state’s key commercial center. Kumar Ramnikant, the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, has issued a travel advisory, urging residents to opt for alternative routes when traveling between Kohima and Dimapur.
The blockage of NH-29, often referred to as the lifeline of Nagaland’s capital, has caused significant inconvenience for commuters and hindered the supply of essential goods to Kohima. Visitors to Nagaland are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and road statuses, especially during the monsoon season, as the region is prone to landslides and heavy rains. Meanwhile, Dimapur is grappling with severe waterlogging due to the continuous downpour, affecting several parts of the city.
The commercial hub has seen widespread flooding, complicating life for both residents and businesses. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued a warning about ongoing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected across the state until August 25. The NSDMA has cautioned that further landslides and flash floods are likely, especially in the lowland and foothill areas of Nagaland.
High-risk areas, including Dimapur, Nuiland, Chumukedima, Bhandari, Pangti, Tizit, and Tuli, are particularly vulnerable to waterlogging and flash floods due to the forecasted rainfall. Residents are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions during this period. The relentless rain has not only disrupted daily life but has also heightened concerns about additional landslides and flash floods in at-risk areas.
The NSDMA, in coordination with local authorities, is closely monitoring the situation and has urged residents to stay informed through official channels. The situation remains dire, and efforts are underway to restore connectivity on NH-29 as soon as weather conditions improve. In the meantime, residents of Kohima and Dimapur are preparing for further rainfall and its associated challenges.
