Editor’s Note: This article originally appeared in Vail Valley Bike, Hike and Outdoor Adventures Magazine . Piney River Ranch is a spectacular 40-acre mountain ranch set on the edge of Piney Lake and at the foot of the Gore Range, just 12 miles outside of Vail. It is best experienced over the course of a full day, with so much to do – and see.

Piney River Ranch is so much more than a quiet place to kick back and relax and enjoy the views. Check out the hiking trails that include a trip to Piney Falls, fly-fishing on Piney River, and canoeing/stand-up paddleboarding on Piney Lake. The dirt road up opens June 21 and remains open through September.

The Lodge Restaurant & Bar is a must-stop. Whether you pull up a chair in the lodge’s dining area or have a seat on the outdoor patio, some of Vail’s finest barbecue fare awaits. Long known as a favorite wedding and day-trip destination, Piney River Ranch is not only a picture-perfect Colorado place to visit, overnight lodging options are available.

Classic cabins close to the lake as well as glamping tents can be booked, making for marvelous mornings waking up steps away from the breathtaking setting. Located 9,350 feet above sea level, the remote high-altitude location brings varying weather, so be prepared. And if you see the moose or any other wildlife for that matter – be sure to find wonder in their beauty, but at a distance.
