[+] overtourism. getty Santorini is chic, charming—and crammed with tourists. This summer has seen another high-pressure season for the Greek island—it received 11,000 cruise passengers in a single day on 23 July, yet a 2018 study by the University of the Aegean concluded that the island can at most welcome 8,000 tourists per day sustainably.

Greek authorities are mulling introducing limits on the number of cruise ships allowed to moor at hotspot destinations including Santorini and Mykonos. However, the mayor of Santorini, Nikos Zorzos, feels immediate action is necessary to mitigate the effects of overtourism. Santorini Will Bring In Limits On Cruise Ships Talking to national news site the Greek Reporter, Zorzos announced he will reintroduce a digital berth allocation system, which distributes cruise arrivals at intervals throughout the day to avoid floods of visitors descending on the island simultaneously.

The system was first brought in back in 2018, during the mayor’s previous term, but was suspended in 2019 by the subsequent administration. “Those 8,000 visitor arrivals per day suggested by the University of the Aegean study are totally sustainable if we allow the designated time between cruise ship berths, thus preventing congestion at all spots on the island,” Zorzos told the Greek Reporter. “The Santorini digital berth allocation system takes qualitative criteria into consideration for granting berth and debarkation permissions—such as the size of the ship and whether it operates as a green ship or not.

Also, the length of the stay is examined; we prioritize any [ships] that wish to stay longer hours on the island, as this means that their passengers won’t be rushing from one spot to the other,” he added. 35 ($0.38) to €10 ($11) per person. Zorzos said he would only be in favor of the increase if the proceeds went to local authorities.

“There are tried and tested solutions for extending the tourist season. Our past initiatives had managed to reduce the pressure of the summer months; show tourists unseen aspects of Santorini; and prove that this is an island worth visiting beyond the summer months,” he added. How Can You Be A Responsible Tourist In Santorini? If you want to visit the famed Greek island but avoid contributing to its tourism woes, the best time to travel is in shoulder seasons in September and October or in April and May.

The weather is usually mild and sunny but the beaches won’t be packed and you can turn up at restaurants without booking. Travel experts at the sustainably-minded resort Santo Collection on the island suggest visiting the lesser-known sites in Santorini, which means getting a more unique travel experience as well as helping alleviate the strain of overtourism on popular attractions. For instance, seek out the Heart of Santorini, a recently discovered lookout point in Megalochori village, and Kamari Beach, an alternative to the crowded Perissa and Perivolos black sand beaches.
