It has been 20 years since downtown Toronto’s SkyDome was renamed the Rogers Centre. The SkyDome, the first stadium in the world to have a fully retractable roof, opened on June 3, 1989. Its name was chosen through a public competition that had more than 150,000 entries in which approximately 2,000 people suggested the eventual winning name of SkyDome, according to the Toronto Star .
It was renamed the Rogers Centre on Feb. 2, 2005. And, just in case the math isn’t mathing for you, the Rogers Centre name has been around longer than SkyDome.
So why did the home of the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team change its name? Rogers Communications Inc., the telecom giant that owns the Blue Jays, bought the stadium in 2004 at a price of $25 million. The stadium has since undergone its largest renovation ever.
The nearly $400-million multi-year project began in 2022 to transform the Rogers Centre into a ballpark-style venue. The Jays have more information on the renos , if you care to read it. Despite its makeover to become a proper baseball venue, the stadium continues to host large-scale events, including six Taylor Swift concerts held in November.
