Married for 50 years to the long-suffering Carmel (Sharon D Clarke) and with three children, he has for decades carried on an illicit affair with his best friend, the shrewd, gentle Morris (Ariyon Bakare).
While Carmel suspects Barry of putting it about in a manner marginally more acceptable to her formidable friends, Morris delivers an ultimatum: if Barry will not leave his wife after all this time, it is over. Screenwriter Nathaniel Price uses James’s voiceover to capture Evaristo’s vigorous, lyrical prose, and director Hong Khaou’s evocation of London’s Caribbean diaspora feels impeccably well observed, eased along by a killer soundtrack of lovers rock. And if they are oddly coy about sex, these first two episodes are piercingly insightful about love of many stripes — parental and marital, sisterly and forbidden.
It was worth the wait. GABRIE.
