A few years ago, just before the pandemic, massive first-look deals were being done by streamers and studios with producers and showrunners for new slates of projects. Very few of those deals, aside from maybe Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes, paid off. Some have been infamous for numerous cancelled and costly projects like J.
J. Abrams who had “Demimonde,” “Overlook” and “Justice League Dark” in the works before they were scrapped. Now though, a new feature piece at has gone into specific deals and revealed the fate and issues of numerous shows in development.
First up, insiders are said to be placing bets on whether Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s “Tomb Raider” series will ever come to fruition even as Amazon is searching for someone to play Lara Croft in the show. Sony is reportedly unlikely to renew its five-year contract with “Spider-Verse” producing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller after a “heated fight” revolving around the budget of the Nic Cage-led live-action “Spider-Noir” series. Sam Esmail’s new take on Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis,” which was seemingly scrapped after the studio spent years and millions of dollars developing it, is “said to be still alive under different auspices”.
His “Battlestar Galactica” redo on the other hand is genuinely dead with the series officially scrapped a few weeks ago. Finally, Seth MacFarlane’s “Ted” cost $8 million an episode and was nearly cancelled before ultimately scoring a second season renewal. An animated companion series is reportedly nearing a greenlight.
