The Long Way Home at Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin until August 31 Talented: Jack Healy as Jack Moriarty and Darina Gallagher as Teresa in The Long Way Home. Photo: Tom Maher This new work from AboutFACE theatre company is a great idea. It’s a jukebox musical based on the songs of Tom Waits, set in the Dublin pub-music scene, using the talents of impressive Waits soundalike Jack Healy.

Should be a surefire hit. But theatre is a slippery beast and, despite great ingredients, it can be hard to get everything to gel. Jack Moriarty (Healy) is a washed-up singer with a drink problem.

His wife Teresa (Darina Gallagher) has kicked him out and refuses to take him back. Teresa is a dry alcoholic, and they met in rehab. Bad influence Margot (Anna Nugent) is trying to persuade Jack to do a Tom Waits set for her pub/nightclub.

She lures him along with an easy supply of whiskey. And Ali (Fiona Lucia McGarry), a young and ambitious singer who waitresses in a diner, engages musically with Jack. Join the Irish Independent WhatsApp channel Stay up to date with all the latest news.
