The famous city centre pub is set to celebrate its 100th birthday A "little pub with a big heart" that's stood the test of time in Liverpool city centre is set to celebrate its 100th birthday. Tucked away from the main stretch of pubs on Ranelagh Street, opposite Liverpool Central Station, you'll find the famous Coopers Townhouse. Located on Cases Street, next to Clayton Square, the pub has long attracted customers from Merseyside and across the globe for its incredible atmosphere and famous karaoke.
Inside the pub, you'll find members of staff who have been working there for decades, as well as regular customers and colourful characters who have been going there for just as long, if not longer. A venue where memories and friends have been made for life, Coopers is a place you can pop into for one drink while out shopping and find yourself "still there hours later". People have travelled hundreds of miles to visit the pub, which is now reaching new audiences through its strong presence on social media.
Coopers has a long history in the city and for decades, many will remember the popular pub was previously called The Sefton. In the 1980s, Tetley Walker was part of Allied Breweries, who acquired pubs through the acquisitions of Tetley's, Walkers, Ind Coope and Allsopp’s. In 1985, The Sefton was developed to look like a free house by the brewery and the name was changed to Coopers - a nickname patrons had adopted for years in a nod to previous licensee, Ada Cooper, in the 192.
