Learn more Seat belts are designed to protect passengers in the event of an emergency (Image: Getty) A viral TikTok trend offering advice to holidaymakers has been slammed by experts as potentially very dangerous. Airline seats, particularly on long-haul flights, can be uncomfortable and cramped.

In an attempt to alleviate this discomfort, travellers have been sharing a peculiar method of fastening their seatbelts. Air passengers have been uploading videos showing their feet propped up on the seats with the belts secured around their ankles, claiming that this position is more comfortable. However, this hack has caused concern among aviation professionals who advise flyers to disregard this trend while travelling.

Travel experts at Netflights recently voiced their opinions on plane etiquette, including this seatbelt trend. They said, "With millions of views on TikTok , passengers on long-haul flights might be tempted to try this for ultimate comfort, however, experts strongly advise not to do this." function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.

It's a very unsafe position to fly in if turbulence occurs, and flight attendants are likely to ask passengers to fasten their seat belts correctly," reports the Mirror .

The NHS states: "Prolonged periods of immobility can lead to slow blood flow in the veins which increases the risk of developing a blood clot within a deep vein in the body." General advice to help mitigate the risk of a DVT is to stay as active as possible.

When seated, passengers should flex and extend their ankles to promote blood circulation. TikTok users are divided over this travel hack. User @mimiswardr0be is one of many who posted a video trying out the seatbelt trick, saying: "Thanks to the girl that told me to put the seatbelt around your feet.

Forever grateful." @mimiswardr0be Sooo much better !!! Former flight attendant @moxeytravels explained in her own video why this new trend is not something passengers should adopt.
