The first barroom in the Roycroft Inn was in founder Elbert Hubbard’s library, toward the back of the building, behind the grand Craftsman Lounge. Since then, other rooms throughout the inn have served as the barroom including the basement in the 1970s and most recently, a small closet-like nook in the lounge. The Library Bar has opened in East Aurora's Roycroft Inn.
“That bar would just get really crammed and it wasn’t very functional,” said bar manager Isabel Davidson. “You couldn’t even get a drink because it was just so crowded in that small space.” Now, the bar is back where it started.
Under Douglas Jemal's new ownership, the Roycroft Inn converted the former library dining room into the Library Bar. It is more spacious, with seating for at least 10 people at the bar. Exposed beam ceilings, a stone fireplace and rose-detailed windows make the room a cozy spot, but the decorative star is a green chandelier by artist Dard Hunter.
In Hunter’s signature green hue, the glass chandelier depicts Roycroft artisans at work making architecture, pottery and woodworking. It’s a rare piece of art hung on display in the center of the room bathing patrons in warm light with a dose of history. The Library Bar has been in a soft opening phase throughout September. Its grand opening is Oct. 3, when the new food and drink menu will be unveiled.
