It’s been a beautiful week so far and with the exception of some smoke from the Canadian wildfires and a couple of pop-up showers, you basically couldn’t ask for a more ideal vacation week. As we head into the weekend, there are some forecasting challenges that will impact the weather, especially Sunday. But for those of you working from home or off on Fridays, that day looks stunning with plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the low-80s.

It will be a nice day to get to the beach, especially since water temperatures are nearing their highest levels of the season. But remember, individual coves can have very different water temperatures due to winds and topographical features. In the broad sense there will be a trough of low pressure — a dip in the jet stream moving toward New England — over the weekend.

The slow nature of this movement will allow a generally dry day on Saturday. Some showers could infiltrate Western Mass. and Vermont by Saturday afternoon, but I think that eastern portions of Southern New England will remain dry and partly to mostly sunny for a very nice day.

Advertisement Temperatures will be in the 60s to start with more humidity in the air. It will reach the low-80s in the afternoon. On Sunday that trough will be closer and there’s a better chance for showers, especially in the afternoon.

If you have an early golf game or are hoping to get outside to do a run or some gardening, conditions should be OK for those activities. If you have any evening outdoor plans, I would have a backup in place in case you need to go inside due to showers. While this area of low pressure is approaching us from the west, Hurricane Ernesto will be moving up along the Eastern Seaboard.

The trough is actually part of the reason why the storm will stay offshore. Storms follow the path of least resistance and Ernesto would have a difficult time moving west into a trough, so it will stay away. Even though it will be far enough east, rough seas and perhaps riptide currents will impact south-facing coastal areas later this weekend and early next week.

The moisture from the storm, however, won’t reach our area and the meteorological dynamics between Ernesto and the trough aren’t likely to influence each another. Advertisement Southern New England: Look for dry weather on Saturday with warm and somewhat humid air in place. There will be a mix of clouds and sunshine with highs in the low-80s.

It will be cloudier on Sunday but still with some sunshine and a risk of showers mostly in the afternoon. Western Mass.: Look for a mix of clouds and sunshine on Saturday with a late-day shower possible.

A better chance for showers arrives on Sunday. it will be humid with temperatures in the 70s to near 80. Cape Cod and Islands: Most of the weekend will remain dry, with a mix of clouds and sunshine and temperatures in the 70s to near 80.

The highest risk of showers arrive Sunday evening. Northern New England: Look for partly to mostly sunny skies on Saturday. Some showers are possible over western areas late in the day.
