A well-known health expert and author, Dr Eric Berg recently shared a four-ingredient smoothie recipe he believes can help clear excess fat from the liver, potentially lowering the risk of conditions like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cirrhosis. Dr Berg, known for his expertise in ketosis and intermittent fasting, regularly shares health advice with over 12 million YouTube followers. He encourages the daily consumption of this smoothie to support liver health and overall wellness.

NAFLD, a common condition involving fat buildup in the liver, often goes unnoticed in its early stages. According to the NHS, the disease can progress through four main stages: simple fatty liver (steatosis), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), fibrosis, and ultimately, cirrhosis. While early stages are often symptomless, advanced stages can lead to symptoms like persistent fatigue, unexplained weight loss, and, in severe cases, jaundice and swelling in the lower body.

The presence of NAFLD increases the risk of high blood pressure, kidney disease, and heart complications, particularly for those with diabetes. A range of factors can increase the likelihood of NAFLD, including obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and certain conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Lifestyle habits like smoking, high cholesterol, and age can also play a role.

Since liver disease often has few symptoms in the beginning, many people are unaware they have NAFLD until it is detected.
