Pune: Some men broke into five flats in a housing society on Samarth Road in Karvenagar between 5am and 5.45am on Tuesday and stole gold and silver jewellery worth Rs1.4 lakh from a flat belonging to a senior citizen (78).

According to police, the senior citizen is a retired person. He had locked his flat and gone on a morning walk when the incident occurred. His wife had gone to their relative's place.

The victim lodged a complaint with the Alankar police later in the afternoon. The intruders did not find anything worth stealing from the other four flats, police said. Senior inspector Sunita Rokade of the Alankar police told TOI, “The society does not have a watchman, but the police have collected CCTV footage from the society and adjoining societies.

Further investigation is under way.” “The CCTV footage shows that two men entered the society premises around 5am and broke open five flats within 45 minutes. None of the society members heard any noise," Rokade said.

“It is suspected that the duo used long rods to break open the locks," the officer said, adding, “It is suspected that the two men had parked their two-wheeler somewhere nearby before committing the thefts.” “The other flats were locked and their owners had gone out. After the theft incident came to light on Tuesday morning, all the owners came back,” Rokade said.
