Huacayas have a dense, crimped fleece, giving a fluffy appearance, while Suris have silky long strands that resemble dreadlocks.

Jacqueline Bishop, who runs a stud 15kms southeast of Pakenham, said they aim for their Suri to have a fleece like pages of a book. "There's clear layers, so you can almost lift up each lock and it looks like it's a bit of a page in the fleece," she said. She and her sister have had alpacas for the last seven years, but started their stud in 2020 after becoming enamoured with the "beautiful creatures".
