But the just-completed multimillion dollar renovation has kept the hotel’s strong bones and casual luxury feel. The dreamy Southern California Spanish Mission-style resort, of whitewashed stucco, colored tiles, palm trees, bougainvillea and rolling hills remains.

As soon as you step out of your car, you feel greeted by the gentle warmth of the area. La Costa, less than five miles away from Carlsbad State Beach and the Pacific, is cooler than inland Southern California. On the August day we visited, it was 100 degrees in the San Fernando Valley and 81 at La Costa.

The 400-acre Omni La Costa Resort & Spa welcomes guests with championship golf courses , eight sparkling resort pools and an award-winning spa . The resort in Carlsbad has 607 guest rooms, suites and villas, most of which were renovated. As the story goes, Las Vegas real estate developer and later LA television producer Merv Adelson went for a horseback ride in the gently rolling hills.

He found the countryside and ocean breezes intoxicating and collaborated with partners to build the iconic property. Adelson was hardly the first to discover the area, as Spanish settlers built a cattle ranch nearby in the 1700’s. Anglo American settlers who flocked there in the early 19 th century found a wealth of freshwater springs, which researchers claimed possessed healing qualities like the springs of the Czech resort town of Karlsbad.

The area was later rebranded as “Carlsbad,” to lure travelers to the mineral wells, beautiful weather and the proximity to the Pacific. Upon check-in, children receive a backpack filled with fun items designed specifically for them. While many families make La Costa their base for exploring San Diego attractions like Legoland, the San Diego Zoo and Birch Aquarium, there also children’s and family activities like Nighttime S’more Roasting, Dive in Movies, Scavenger Hunts, Arts and Crafts, and Limbo and Hula Hoop competitions. There were many families with multiple young children during our mid-week visit.

The hotel is obviously making a major effort to bring in families while providing sports, spa and other activities for both leisure and business travelers. La Costa is place for people to relax and also to congregate. The hotel has 600 rooms and more than 100,000 square feet of meeting space, which was recently refreshed in the renovation.

Omni La Costa As back to school approaches, the crowd changes, particularly during the week. That’s when the 100,000 square feet of meeting space comes into play. La Costa has long been a favorite incentive travel destination.

A manager told me the hotel recently hosted 400 incentive ‘winners’ from a major corporation, with the group enjoying golf, tennis, fine dining and local excursions. For almost 30 years, La Costa and its Dick Wilson-designed 72 par course was home to the prestigious Tournament of Champions where big names like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods competed. Now the golf courses have been renovated and replanted at a cost of more than $20 million.

Golf Digest calls the all-new courses designed by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner “La Costa’s rebirth.” The course has already played host to the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Division I Golf Championships, held a week apart, and will continue to do so in coming years. La Costa has also long been known for its tennis facilities.

These include 17 clay and hard courts, including seven lighted tennis courts for evening play, and stadium seating for 1,000 fans. The Omni La Costa offers a variety of clinics and tennis lessons based on skill level and desired workout. They include Tennis 101 & 201 classes, intermediate and advanced clinics, cardio tennis offerings, tennis vacation packages, ladies’ retreats, and adult and children’s tennis camps.

(Photo by Orlando Ramirez/Getty Images) Getty Images I didn’t have a week to learn how to play golf or tennis, but I did have a couple of hours to hone my understanding of pickleball. The Omni La Costa has devoted considerable resources to the trendy sport.

Gigi was a tough teacher, but my wife and I survived a grueling pickleball session and mostly stayed out of the ‘forbidden’ kitchen on the court. Speaking of kitchens, La Costa has a number of dining options, from the classic Bob's Steak & Chop House to the contemporary VUE with its fresh catch and “comfort food” like braised short rib, fried chicken, and tri-tip beef. VUE has an outdoor dining patio, and Bar Traza also overlooks the hills of La Costa and the resort's lush golf courses.

The Marketplace is open for snacks to grab and go, like our cold brew coffee, although welcoming tables make it tempting to sit and enjoy the breeze. The rooms are spacious and updated with soft casual textures and neutral tones, as well as details such as handcrafted painted tiles, art works (our room had a painting of a tennis racket) and wrought ironwork. Our hotel bathroom had a vanity table and even had electronic lighting controls on the main mirror.

It retains its classic Mediterranean lines but has recently been transformed with touches like three new salt rooms for unwinding and decompressing, refurbished steam rooms with new aromatherapy features, and updated showers, locker rooms, and treatment rooms such as the Vichy showers . There’s a new emphasis on wellness at La Costa, from the renewed spa to outdoor aquacise workouts in the pool. Our group awoke at 6:00AM for a sunrise sound bath and meditation event.

In the pool, we floated on air mattresses, wearing gentle eyeshades to direct our vision inward. La Costa is also in touch with its outdoor legacy. On the golf course, the resort keeps a beehive that produces honey, while magical special events like white tablecloth dining are held under festive lamps on the fairway at night.
