Tuesday, January 21, 2025 The UK government is poised to approve significant expansions at Gatwick and Luton airports, aiming to bolster economic growth and enhance the nation’s aviation infrastructure. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is expected to decide by February 27 on Gatwick Airport Limited’s proposal to bring its existing northern (standby) runway into routine use. This initiative is part of a £2.

2 billion project designed to increase Gatwick’s capacity to accommodate up to 74 million passengers annually by the late 2030s, a substantial rise from the 46 million passengers handled in 2019. Concurrently, a decision is anticipated by April 3 regarding London Luton Airport Limited’s plan to expand its passenger capacity from the current limit of 18 million to 32 million per annum. The proposed development encompasses new terminal facilities, additional taxiways, and enhancements to the surface access network, including an extension of the Luton DART.

This expansion is projected to create thousands of jobs and significantly contribute to the local economy. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is also expected to reaffirm support for Heathrow Airport’s third runway project in an upcoming speech on economic growth. While the expansion at Heathrow has been a subject of extensive debate due to environmental concerns, the government’s backing underscores a commitment to advancing the UK’s aviation capabilities, provided that strict environmental criteria are met.
