For some people, living by the sea is the ultimate goal. However, beautiful seaside towns or cities often have extremely high property prices . Luckily, there is one stunning seaside town in the UK that offers homebuyers the chance to live by the coast for a fraction of the price compared to other waterfront locations.

Maryport is located on the Solway Firth in Cumbria and has an average house price of just £142,099, making it one of the most affordable coastal towns in the country. The latest figures from Rightmove show that terraced homes in the area sold for an average of £120,668, while semi-detached properties went for £133,594. Detached homes fetched higher prices, averaging £260,893, but even these remain significantly cheaper than similar properties in more expensive seaside locations .

But there is much more to Maryport than just its cheap house prices. The town was originally home to Alauna, a Roman fort built to protect the coastline near Hadrian’s Wall. Remains of the Roman presence can still be seen at the Senhouse Roman Museum, which houses one of the largest collections of Roman artefacts in Britain.

Over the centuries, Maryport became a big shipping and coal mining hub, with its shipyards producing over 280 vessels. It was also the birthplace of Thomas Henry Ismay, the founder of the White Star Line, which famously built the Titanic. In recent years, Maryport has seen investment in regeneration, with a yacht marina and improvements to the town’s waterf.
