Although Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, U.S. presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ official running mate, was the one speaking on stage at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, it’s his son Gus Walz who is now in the spotlight.

The DNC’s third night featured guests like former president Bill Clinton and actress Mindy Kaling with live performances by Stevie Wonder and John Legend. Also Wednesday, Walz accepted his nomination as Harris’ VP pick. His speech touched upon many issues facing Americans, like reproductive rights, gun violence and taxes.



He also mentioned his family, calling his wife, daughter and son his “entire world.” Many were awed by Walz’ son Gus heartfelt reaction after being mentioned in his dad’s speech. “That’s my dad,” he said as he proudly pointed to Walz on stage.

Senator Amy Klobuchar commended Walz on his parenting after a video went viral on social media. “You know you’ve done well as a parent when your kids are as proud of you as Gus and (Walz’ daughter) Hope are of Tim Walz,” she wrote in a post on X. Walz and his wife recently told People Magazine that their son has a non-verbal learning disorder, ADHD and anxiety disorder. Those with the non-verbal learning disorder often have trouble with organization, attention, executive functioning, nonverbal communication, and motor skills, according to charitable organization Learning Disabilities of Ontario. There are many kinds of anxiety disorders , which can cause fear, dread and other symptoms that are out of proportion to the situation, per the Cleveland Clinic.

ADHD , or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, is one of the most common mental disorders affecting children, according to Psychiatry.org. Symptoms include inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

“When he was becoming a teenager, we learned that Gus has a non-verbal learning disorder in addition to an anxiety disorder and ADHD, conditions that millions of Americans also have,” said Walzes in their statement. In a statement to People, the Walzes said Gus was “different from his classmates” when he was growing up and spent a lot of time alone. But the couple have maintained that his condition was not a setback, but rather his “secret power.
