. [+] on a plane, but some health experts caution against not drinking or sleeping on long-haul flights. getty In-flight entertainment goes back as far as 1921 when passengers on an Aeromarine Airways flight watched a black-and-white film, “Howdy Chicago!” that was projected in the cabin.

These days, travelers have all kinds of options to keep entertained during a flight, from watching movies on their seat back screens to binge watching pre-downloaded Netflix shows or catching up on favorite podcasts. Curved 45-inch screens could even be coming to business class seats in the future thanks to a new product design from seat manufacturer Collins Aerospace and inflight entertainment company Panasonic Avionics. So, in this golden age of in-flight entertainment with all these options available to travelers, who would want to just stare ahead at the seatback, watching nothing but perhaps the flight map for the duration of a long-haul flight? The trend is referred to as “rawdogging” a flight and it basically means foregoing any of the in-flight perks—no in-flight entertainment, no snacks or beverages from the carts rolling through the aisles, and, in the most extreme cases, no drinking water or napping.

Like many trends, it’s playing out on TikTok, with some travelers posting about their most extreme rawdogging flight feats: “Just rawdogged a 7-hour flight (new personal best) no headphones, no movie, no water, nothing,” wrote one user: @oiwudini , a Manchester-based DJ and producer. “The power of my mind knows no bounds.” Here’s everything you need to know about the rawdogging flight trend, including why it might appeal to some travelers and what health experts have to say about it.

What is the Point of Rawdogging a Flight? Could rawdogging a flight make you more mindful? Maybe experts says, but don't go so far as to .

.. [+] deprive yourself of water and sleep, they caution.

getty Those who are rawdogging flights say that by eliminating distractions, they’re practicing mindfulness while traveling. For some, this actually can be a positive experience: If you haven’t already adopted a consistent mindfulness or meditation practice, intentionally avoiding in-flight entertainment can allow you to be fully present with your thoughts and the environment around you, says Crystal Riley, founder of Wellness & Woo , a holistic coaching service that focuses on goal achievement built on a foundation of mindfulness practice. “It can allow you to deepen your practice, by tuning into your breath, the sounds of the plane, or just your own heartbeat,” Riley says.

“It’s an opportunity to observe your inner landscape without judgment, which can lead to a deeper sense of calm and clarity.” However, rawdogging a flight may not be the right approach for everyone, she says. For some, not having those “normal” distractions on a plane can amplify feelings of anxiety or restlessness, especially while being in such a confined space.

“If you find yourself becoming overly anxious or uncomfortable, it could be a sign that this practice is not serving you in that moment,” she says. “Like any meditative practice, it's important to listen to your body and mind, adjusting as needed to maintain a sense of well-being.” Is Raw Dogging a Flight Good For You? Health experts recommend drinking water on a flight to stay hydrated.

getty Health and wellness experts have some serious concerns about the rawdogging a flight trend, especially when it comes to skipping sleep, not drinking water, and restricting blood flow by not moving around at all on a long-haul flight. In a nutshell, if the challenge requires you to sacrifice your basic needs, it’s just not worth it, says Angela Williams , LCSW, a psychotherapist and mindset coach. When you’re landing in a new country, and navigating a new airport, the last thing you want to feel is fuzzy.

And not sleeping during a long-haul flight can cause sleep deprivation, leading to cognitive impairment, she explains. “During REM sleep, your brain conducts a reset as it integrates your emotional experiences from the day,” Williams explains. “Sleep helps regulate your nervous system, consolidates memories, and balances neurotransmitters responsible for optimizing your overall brain function.

” On long flights, it’s important to stay on top of “travel hygiene,” says New York City-based dietitian Tiffany Ma , R.D. For example, staying hydrated on a plane is recommended as the moisture in an airplane is often dry, she explains.

“As a result, the dry air can cause an increase in dehydration,” Ma says. Also, it’s never a good idea to still still for the entirety of a long-haul flight that’s six or more hours. Even if the seatbelt sign is on and you can’t get up and stretch, health experts recommend moving your legs and feet around, doing calf raises or stretches to keep your blood flowing.

If someone who was trying to rawdog a flight was sitting completely still, it could constrict the blood flow in their lower body, says Reema Kanda, R.D. at Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Southern California.

This could lead to blood clots in the legs. What Are The Benefits of Raw Dogging a Flight? Eliminating distractions on a plane could be a good meditative practice. But wellness experts say .

.. [+] you shouldn't deprive yourself of sleep or drinking water as part of the 'rawdogging' a flight trend.

getty Rawdogging a flight is totally appropriate if the distance is relatively short and if you are traveling out West, since the body’s natural Circadian rhythm will have a much easier time adjusting to sleeping earlier than sleeping later, Ma says.
