There are few finer things in life than a pint in a cosy country pub at the end of a walk in the Peak District . It's lucky then that the Derbyshire Dales has plenty of boozers to go at. In fact, new research has found, it has more pubs per person than anywhere else in England and Wales.

According to the Office for National Statistics, the rural district, much of which is in the national park and includes the towns of Matlock, Bakewell, Ashbourne and Darley Dale, has 132 pubs within its borders. That means there are the equivalent of 184.5 pubs for every 100,000 people living there.

The next highest pubs per population is cited as The City of Westminster with 357 pubs which works out to 168 per 100,000 residents.

By contrast Manchester has 282 pubs, which works out at just 48.6 pubs for every 100,000 people. Meanwhile drinkers in Tameside are the best served in Greater Manchester.

There are 214 pubs in the borough, or 91 for every 100,000 people. But these stats don't factor in density and proximity of the pubs. If they did the Derbyshire Dales would be a lot lower down the list with The City of London taking the top spot with 43 pubs per square mile.
