The Leela Palace Udaipur has what can only be described as a fairy tale setting; perched over Lake Pichola in northern India’s princely region of Rajasthan with a view of the City Palace on the hill, illuminated dramatically at night. Even getting there is a singular experience; skimming across the lake in a dedicated private electric boat lined with jewel tone pillows, with the domes of the Leela Palace looming above you as you approach. Given its location and lavish design the main hotel is a worthy place to stay on its own.

But this month, it opened Arq at Pichola, a collection of private villas with correspondingly special experiences. The name, translated from Sanskrit, means distilled essence and the first essence of luxury is space: each villa measures 3875 square feet for Lake Villas or 5167 square feet for Lake Villas with a private deck. The two bedroom Family Villa spans 8643 square feet.

Apart from private decks offering a view of the lake, they all include private pools and Jacuzzis. The main hotel is hardly known for spartan décor: the common rooms and bedrooms are designed with ornate silver chairs, intricately chiseled mirrors, elaborate crystal chandeliers, furniture inlaid with mother of pearl. This more is more style continues at Arq with brass inlaid wooden floors, precious lapis stones, gilded mirrors, local artwork and other opulent features to suggest what the region’s rulers might experience.

Personal service is also key, starting with airport tr.
