Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Montreal, Quebec: Tourists enjoying the sites in downtown Montreal in the summer getty The Michelin Guide has this week announced that it will finally make its way to Quebec—and for many travelers and culinary enthusiasts, it’s about time the province has received such recognition. The Michelin Guide had already found roots in neighboring Canadian cities Vancouver and Toronto back in 2022—which left Canadian culinary enthusiasts feeling somewhat disappointed by the decision to forego what is considered to be the best province for food in the country. It’s true that bringing the Michelin Guide to a new city comes with a cost—the Florida tourism board, for example, paid $150,000 to rate three of its cities—but for Quebecois culinary enthusiasts, adding Quebec to the list means earning international recognition of the province’s fine cuisine.

Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide, states that she is “excited to plant [her] flag in Quebec as the newest destination for the Michelin Guide in Canada,” adding that “Quebec’s culinary scene shines a light on the rich heritage and traditions of the province attracting travelers on the lookout for remarkable and tasty experiences.” Of course, Quebecois, and particularly Montreal-based chefs and culinary enthusiasts have long considered many of the provinces's par restaurants to be Michelin-star worthy, especially as neighboring Canadian cities began to receive stars over two years ago. “It is with immense pride that all of our partners welcome the arrival of the Michelin Guide across the Province of Quebec, which will further showcase our local artisans on the international stage.” The first restaurant selection will be released in 2025 and will feature restaurants throughout the province—not just Montreal—with a promise to include both avant-garde and traditional Quebecois cooking. function loadConnatixScript(document) { if (!window.

It’s hard to predict exactly which restaurants will make the list as many of the best restaurants in Montreal don’t focus exclusively on prestige but rather create an inviting space for having a good time that just happens to serve great food and wine in tandem. Still, the city of Montreal is arguably the best in Canada when it comes to drinking and dining and is more than deserving of Michelin recognition. It will be interesting to see which venues are awarded the prestigious stars once the guide rolls out next year and how that might change the landscape of dining and traveling within Quebec as a whole.
