What was meant to be a relaxing summer cruise along the Mediterranean ended in tragedy. The superyacht ‘Bayesian’ owned by magnate Mike Lynch shook the town of Porticello, Sicily, and the world, after sinking off the Italian coast. PUBLICIDAD The Bayesian had departed from Rotterdam, Netherlands, and after crossing the Strait of Gibraltar and making a stopover in Milazzo, it arrived in Porticello on Sunday.

The 12 passengers, from the United Kingdom, Canada, United States, New Zealand, and Ireland, had booked the cruise through agencies specializing in luxury vacations, and it is unknown if there was a previous connection between them. On board, they had a crew of 10 people, mostly citizens of Sri Lanka, who were responsible for meeting all their needs on board. PUBLICIDAD This Friday, Italian rescuers brought ashore the body of the last person who was still missing, reported the Italian Coast Guard.

Authorities believe it is the teenage daughter of the British magnate who died in the tragic incident. Hannah Lynch, 18, was the only person who had not been found. "The Lynch family is devastated, in shock, and is being comforted and supported by relatives and friends.

Their thoughts are with all those affected by the tragedy," said a family spokesperson in a statement issued on Friday. What was the inside of the Bayesian like, which they claim was 'unsinkable'? Valued at around 40 millions dollars, the Bayesian was a nautical gem that stood out for its 75-meter aluminum mast, the tallest in the world on a sailboat. It was built in 2008 by the prestigious Italian shipyard Perini Navi and then underwent a complete renovation in 2020.

The ship had a capacity for 22 people who could stay in its six luxurious cabins, spread over 143 square meters, and could also enjoy the spacious recreational areas on its 436 square meter deck. According to its website, the luxurious yacht could be rented for USD 222,359 per week. The founder of The Italian Sea Group (the organization that oversees Perini Navi, the company that built the superyacht) Giovanni Costantino, has come out to state after the accident that the luxurious yacht was "practically unsinkable", and that the shipwreck was due to "human" errors, which he attributed to the crew for not following the proper procedures.

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Constantino revealed a number of phenomena that he grouped into a "very long list of errors" and was categorical in emphasizing that "there shouldn't have been people in the cabins, the ship shouldn't have been anchored." “Why didn't the crew know that a storm was approaching? The passengers said something absurd, that the storm came unexpectedly, out of nowhere. This is not true.

Everything was predictable ,” Costantino also questioned, convinced that the Bayesian was “one of the safest ships in the world”. Now, the yacht is located sunken at a depth of 57 meters and investigations and rescue operations have resumed with helicopters, divers, and military ships. Italian authorities have already initiated an investigation into the sinking, and the Marine Accident Investigation Division of the United Kingdom has sent four inspectors to Sicily to conduct a preliminary assessment.
