Sami Lukis has been on plenty of holidays by herself and as a result has worked out a few tricks to make sure things go as smoothly as possible. 9Travel caught up with the seasoned traveller to find out what some of the most important things were to consider when travelling solo. Reading as many reviews as you can is crucial, she says, as well as choosing a good location - even if it means paying a little extra.

Sami also says if you're staying in an Airbnb or similar holiday rental, make sure you don't arrive too late. "In case you can't find the key in the dark or you can't work out the code on the lock. And the hosts aren't always available after hours," she points out.

"You don't have anyone to help you with your luggage, getting that suitcase on and off the baggage carousel," Sami says. "Also particularly if you're travelling through Europe on the trains.

But the "number one" most important thing Sami says you need to remember when travelling solo is to make sure someone else knows where you are at all times.

"Make sure you always share your itinerary with family and friends and give them as much information as you possibly can as to where you're going to be at any one time."
