It's well known that Pete Doherty, the infamous lead singer of The Libertines, has swapped a love of pharmaceuticals for the much safer life choice that is cheese. A band from Cornwall are particularly pleased about this as it's led to them getting a support slot on the legendary British group's current UK tour. It’s been an amazing few years for The Ultra Violets aka The UVs.
It all started with a gig at the Eden Sessions (after I tipped off the promoter about them) which led to more support with that night's headliners McFly, big national festivals including Isle of Wight and , and other numerous supports with the likes of Feeder, Pigeon Detectives and Space. The Cornish band got to hang out with The Libertines when they played in earlier this year, but forgot to ask them if there was any chance they could support them in the future. Then Cornish Yarg and a leopard print hat, which smelled of cheese, sealed the deal.
The UVs' frontman Perran Nicholls takes up the tale: "We first met Carl [Barât, The Libertines' co-frontman and guitarist] after we got offered a gig to play his bar in Margate. It took us seven hours to get there but the prospect of him maybe being there to watch us was enough for us to hit the road. It’s rare for a rock star venue owner to actually care enough to be there so we weren’t holding much hope.
"It was a Monday night in the middle of winter and the journey took longer than expected, so it was to our delight to notice the mainman himself was .
