Here are just some of the flowers you can plant in August, despite the hot temperatures: Cactus Cacti are the perfect plant to add to your home this month. On their calendar, the gardening experts explain how to get started with your own cactus plant. "Fill a pot with moist gritty free-draining compost and gently sow cacti seeds under the surface of the dirt.

Sprinkle a layer of vermiculite over the seeds in turn covering the whole surface of the compost." Following this, the pot should then be covered with a plastic bag and left by a warm windowsill. The seedlings should begin to grow within a few weeks, and can be transplanted into individual pots in the following spring.

Feverfew For feverfew, which was once known as the 'medieval aspirin' thanks to its healing qualities, the experts simply state: "So feverfew seeds outdoors in August into prepared seed beds." Potentilla The gorgeous potentilla flowers can be planted in August, with the experts suggesting opting for a sunny section fo your garden, that has some shade in the afternoon. Potentilla seeds should be planted about 20 to 45 cm apart from one another, and although they prefer slightly acidic soil they can still be planted in plain soil.

California poppies California poppies may be a rather shortlived flower, but they thrive well even in difficult conditions and require little to no attention. This hardy drought-tolerant plant will die at the end of the season, making their flowering season the perfect time to plant more for the following year's bloom. Wild carrot Wild carrot seeds germinate best in the winter and should be planted at the end of August as we begin to head into autumn.

When it comes to planting wild carrot in your garden, the pros at fantasticgardeners.co.uk advise: "Sow seeds directly outside and cover them with a thin layer of soil.

It takes two years for the plant to flower, so if you want a continual display, sow seeds each year." Siberian wallflower Planting Siberian wallflowers in August will give a beautiful bloom during the following spring. The seeds should be planted outdoors into moist and well-drained seed compost.

They should then be covered in a layer of vermiculite and kept moist. They should complete germination within a week or two of being planted. Coleus For planting coleus, the experts say: "Fill a seed tray or small container with good quality, well-draining potting mix.

Place your seeds on top of the soil and press them in gently without covering them with dirt, as coleus seeds need light to germinate." The tray should then be covered in plastic and placed on a warm windowsill, the solid should be kept moist and the seedlings should be regularly watered..
