Some are home to more than 100,000 of the writhing, snapping reptiles, which can grow more than four metres in length and weigh half a tonne.
Most will end up as luxury bags and watch straps. Not everyone would consider investing in alligator farms, but for a time, Chris Heller was toying with the idea of putting $US10 million ($14.8 million) into one in Georgia.
