T here has been a lot of chat over the last couple of weeks about the 1990s, thanks, of course, to the announcement of the reunion tour that was never going to be but that now, courtesy of the Gallagher frères no longer being on non-speaking terms, is. Where were you, who were you, when Oasis’s Wonderwall came out in 1995 is one of the questions those of us who are old enough have been asking ourselves. But there’s a very different kind of wonderwall that defined that decade for me.

The remarkable shop windows at Harvey Nichols, at the time London’s most exciting luxury store by some margin, were like walls of wonder. Bravura encapsulations of all that was glamorous, they were a true assault on the senses. Yet somehow they also channelled a smile-inducing sprezzatura that was as light as a marabou feather.



It was all I could do not to press my nose against the glass. In all honesty, on occasion I probably did..
