WITH hundreds of stalls, a gorgeous Ferris wheel and ice-rink – this award-winning Christmas market sprawls through the entire city. Croatia’s capital Zagreb holds an unforgettable Christmas market called Advent Zagreb. With flights from Dublin just 2 hours and 55 minutes, it’s the perfect getaway to kick off the jolly season.
And Ryanair bosses currently have flights on offer from €21.99 in December. The iconic market starts November 30 and runs until January 7.
Music, stalls, rides, food kiosks, and fun kids’ activities fill the streets at 12 different locations. Take in the festive atmosphere with a stroll through the centre. Christmas lights illuminate street poles, trees and bridges.
The beloved ice skating rink on King Tomislav Square will provide hours of fun for all ages. Last year the ice rink hosted a number of stunning musical performances. Little ones will have lots of fun at Tuđmanac Park with the Ferris Wheel, merry-go-round, and an ice slide.
Visit all the stalls at Ban Jelačić Square (Zagreb’s main square), European Square, and Strossmayer Promenade. Grab a bite to eat with plenty of traditional Croatian snacks and warm drinks on sale. Wander through the glistening Christmas trees in Zrinjevac Park, as fairy lights twinkle above.
Advent Zagreb bagged the top spot for three consecutive years in 2016, 2017, and 2018, according to travel website European Best Destinations. They said: “The Croatian capital's Advent programme expanded rapidly, reaching all corners of the city, with a rich programme of events, concerts, gastronomy, ice skating, kids’ activities, and more, all tastefully lit up with festive lighting. “The smell of mulled wine and local delicacies filled the air, and there was laughter and romance on every corner, as locals and tourists took to the streets to enjoy this welcome breath of life during the darker winter months.
