The Block viewers slam 'unlikeable' contestants on new season and complain Nine is 'deliberately casting people who will create drama' READ MORE: Scott Cam reveals shock twist for this year's Block contestants By Kinta Walsh-cotton For Daily Mail Australia Published: 01:01 BST, 13 August 2024 | Updated: 01:10 BST, 13 August 2024 e-mail View comments The Block: Island premiered on Monday night after months of promising the 'biggest' season ever , but fans were less than impressed by the first episode. Taking to X - formerly known as Twitter - many viewers said this year's batch of new contestants were completely 'unlikeable'. Some pointed to a lack of 'cultural diversity' while others said the teams representing the milestone 20th season are just there to 'create drama'.

'Why is everyone so unlikeable? Poor casting job this season,' one person said, while another wrote: 'I think this might be the most unhinged season yet.' A third added: 'OMG am I [the] only one who thinks that all of this year's contestants are unlikeable. Horrible women.

I don't think I'm going to watch it this year.' 'Eight people that are exactly the same, except one has green hair,' one commented, as another agreed: 'No older couple, no gay couple, not much of cultural diversity.' Some other viewer wrote: 'No entertaining couples like Mitch and Mark.

They were brilliant.' 'It's like they have deliberately cast people who will create drama. I think my wife is ready to kill them all already!' one X user said.

It comes after Scott revealed that contestants on recent seasons have less grit than they did 20 years ago when the show began.

'The contestants are less resilient than they were 20 years ago, 15 years ago,' Scott told news.com.au last week.

One angry viewer previously penned a lengthy essay slamming The Block as 'toxic' due to the constant arguments between contestants.

Long-time viewer Evie Farrell said she wouldn't let her young daughter watch the program and had turned off the ratings juggernaut because it features 'more bullying than building'. Farrell called out the show's 'negativity, drama and scandal', zeroing in on the feud brewing between couple Steph and Gian and the other contestants. She said Blockheads Leah and Ash and Kristy and Brett are 'targeting' Steph especially, who appears, she says, to be emotionally vulnerable.

'It's beyond me why The Block is promoting a toxic and disturbing bullying narrative as the main storyline for this season,' Farrell wrote in an article penned for Mamamia. She said it would be better to show 'positive role models the whole family can watch and support together.' Farrell insisted that fans actually want to see 'likeable couples' who create beautiful rooms and homes.

Some pointed to a lack of 'cultural diversity' while others said the teams who are meant to represent the milestone 20th season are 'just there to create drama The current series of The Block was filmed earlier this year in the popular Victorian tourism hotspot Phillip Island. Daily Mail Australia can reveal a Channel Nine-owned company purchased Island Cove Villas on the Victorian Island for a whopping $9.5million.

Situated two-and-a-half hours from Melbourne, the site featured nine homes, a communal pool, a BBQ pavilion, tennis court and a children's playground. The Block continues Tuesday at 7.30pm on Channel Nine and 9Now.
