We're in that strange part of the year where you can smell fall but it's still summer. There are a couple impatient trees going red. The Halloween decorations are going on sale at the grocery stores.

Somebody you know is recommending a horror film you've never heard of. Quad-City Times Reporter Gannon Hanevold But I'm still holding onto hope, because it felt like summer this weekend in downtown Davenport and Rock Island, as Alternating Currents shows ripped through the city streets. The weather was humid, so I dressed in shorts and ordered nice cold beverages across town.

I'm still clinging onto this last gasp of summer, and one thing that's great about a Midwestern summer: the food trucks. I dined at plenty of sit-down spots for Alternating Currents weekend, many of which I've written about in this column before: Great River, Stompbox, Me & Billy. But the best thing I ate this week was a dessert, from local food truck MozBites.

MozBites was set up on Saturday just outside of Kaiserslautern Square, where Natasha Blaine performed in mid-afternoon. I'd just eaten a late lunch, so I didn't have the stomach space for another savory dish, like one of MozBites' samosas. But I always have an interest in sweets, so I went for a dozen mini donuts to share with my girlfriend.

And then I went for a dozen more. The first order I tried out was a time-tested classic: cinnamon sugar mini-donuts. My mom used to make donuts like these growing up, so it was a little slice of home, too.

The dough itself was rich and sweet enough to carry a dessert on its own. But the very generous dusting of cinnamon and sugar was the icing on top. Well, that is, until I went back for a second dozen of mini-donuts with literal icing on top.

The cinnamon sugar mini donuts at Mozbites are a classic pick. MozBites offers a variety of frosting flavors you can drizzle on the mini donuts: chocolate, vanilla, apple and strawberry. They also have a classic powdered sugar option, if you're in the mood to get some dust on your clothes.

I let my girlfriend pick between apple and strawberry, and she went with the former. It was a great choice. I feared that the icing would be too rich to eat for a full half-dozen, but it was actually a pretty tame sweetness.

And the frostings are all made in-house at MozBites, too, so they taste fresher than something you'd get from a tub at the store. Mozbites has mini donuts with various flavored frosting options, including apple and strawberry. A dozen mini donuts at MozBites are $6.

That's a steal, especially if you're planning to split the dessert with a friend or significant other. If you don't want to eat that much dough, or spend that much dough, you can always order a half-dozen for $3. Next time I see MozBites around town, I'm determined to try their savory options, like the chicken, spicy chicken or veggie samosas, which are sold for $6 in sets of four.

They also have a Chicken Biryani Rice meal for $6, that can be paired with two samosas in a combo for $8. It's all cheap, and it all looks and smells delicious. Mozbites is a Davenport-based food truck with samosas and desserts.

Because they're a food truck, there isn't a solid place to see MozBites, so I'd recommend staying up-to-date on their Facebook page. Some of their most frequent haunts are the Marketplace at 2500 in Moline and the Freight House Farmer's Market in Davenport. They've also been spotted at Radicle Effect Brewerks in Rock Island.

So these mini donuts are, truly, for every Quad-Citian to enjoy. Scenes from Alternating Currents on Saturday, August 17, in Davenport. MozBites was a perfect spot for dessert at Alternating Currents because it didn't require any sitting down or interruptions to our music plans.

The cinnamon sugar donuts come in an easy-to-carry bag that makes munching while walking an easy task. And the frosted donuts came in a boat with a fork, so no mess was made on either end. The service was quick and friendly, and the small menu made ordering super simple.

I hope I can find MozBites again sometime soon, because a samosa-donut dinner-dessert combo sounds like a perfect food truck meal. Plus, those apple-frosted mini donuts will taste even better when the real autumn comes around. With our weekly newsletter packed with the latest in everything food.
