CLEVELAND -- Every morning on my way to work, I walk past an abandoned bedroom. For 17 years, it was a happy mess. Originally, there were blocks and stuffed animals strewn across the floor.

The next layer was trains and cars. A layer of Legos was built up over the next several years. The top, visible layer: books, all manner of electronics, and the occasional single sock.



I do not know where I would begin to excavate this domestic geological site. Where should all this stuff go? Now he is heading off to college! It’s comforting to know that lots of other parents are wrestling with this dreaded milestone. The “where” isn’t the hard part.
