It’s that time of year when you can’t move for celebrity vacay snaps on social. Sparkling azure seas, superyachts and – this year, especially – 50-plus A-listers showcasing their incredible figures in . Demi Moore, who is 61, enjoyed a family holiday with her daughters Rumer and Scout, and was snapped wearing a tan-enhancing white bikini and a baseball cap, with her long, dark hair cascading over her shoulders as she helped her toddler granddaughter to walk along a jetty.

Meanwhile, actor and artist , 66, treated her Instagram followers to a candid “pool to painting” snap, for which she wore only a pair of ruched bikini bottoms in a sky-blue hue in her studio. Supermodel Naomi Campbell, 54, also recently posted photos from her time at a yoga retreat, wearing an ab-revealing crop top and leggings as she executed a near-perfect handstand. While she wasn’t technically wearing a bikini, it would be rude not to include her.

Then, lest we forget, there is Salma Hayek, 57, who is almost always to be found in (when she’s not playing the ), and has acknowledged that her followers like her “bikini pictures the most”. On a boat trip a while back, the curvaceous actor debut a patterned, plunging blue number as she frolicked in the water during a family holiday. Gone are the days when women were encouraged to swap out their bikinis in favour of more modest one-piece swimsuits once they reached a certain age – yet another unspoken and thoroughly outdated “rule” women have had to contend with, like cutting your after 50.

These women may not be the norm – they have access to the world’s best treatments and tweakments, and the money to pay for them – but they do defy convention. And they make us feel like we can too. Embracing ageing and celebrating their bodies while they do it, they’re a reminder that we can all slip into a bikini if we feel like it, regardless of our age, weight or aesthetic.

So next time the sun shines (here’s hoping), get your itsy bitsy bikini out – and enjoy it..
