the Trenino Verde in Sardinia (Image: Wikimedia Commons / MAXDERKAX) In the heart of Sardinia, Italy , the Il Trenino Verde della Sardegna, or "The Little Green Train of Sardinia," offers an extraordinary rail tourism experience. Operated by ARST, this unique 404-kilometer narrow-gauge railway system meanders through the island's stunning landscapes, offering travelers a leisurely journey with breathtaking views. Don't be surprised if you see conductors shooing sheep off the tracks or stopping traffic at level crossings, adding a charming touch to the slow travel experience.

Il Trenino Verde has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. Even the renowned British writer D. H.

Lawrence chronicled his travels on the Cagliari–Isili line in his 1921 book, Sea and Sardinia, reflecting the timeless allure of this scenic route. function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.createElement('script');el.

The 1989 merger of FCS and SFS into the Ferrovie della Sardegna (FdS) led to significant investments, supported by regional and European Union funding, to enhance the service. This included the restoration of steam locomotives, vintage carriages, and station facilities. On May 10, 1995, the restored Tresnuraghes–Bosa Marina line was reopened exclusively for Trenino Verde services, marking the first tourist-train-only line in Sardinia.
