Saturday, September 21, 2024 Starting on December 1, 2024, Thailand will implement a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement for travelers from Mauritius, South Africa, and Morocco. This change will mark the end of visa-free access for citizens of these countries, as Thailand seeks to enhance its immigration controls and strengthen border security. Thailand continues to be a favored travel destination among tourists from the Africa. Cities in Mauritius, South Africa, and Morocco, in particular, have seen a growing number of their citizens choosing Thailand for holidays. The introduction of the ETA system will initially be a pilot program starting December 1, 2024, and is expected to be fully operational by June 2025.



The entire process will be conducted online through Thailand’s official e-Visa portal, and the ETA will be provided at no cost to travelers. The ETA will allow a single entry into Thailand and be valid for up to 60 days. Visitors who wish to extend their stay can apply for a one-time extension of 30 days without having to leave the country.

This flexibility makes it easier for tourists to enjoy a longer stay without facing the hassle of reapplying or traveling back and forth. The Thai government introduced the ETA for several reasons, all aimed at improving the efficiency and security of its border management systems. Visitors must complete the application online prior to departure and present the approved ETA upon arrival in Thailand. Those who do not comply with the new regulations, including overstaying the allowed time, may face penalties, underscoring the importance of adhering to the updated entry requirements.
