Dibrugarh: The ambassador of Thailand to India, Pattarat Hongtong, on Monday participated in a pivotal meeting at the district commissioner’s office in Dibrugarh, focussing on enhancing tourism and commerce between the two countries, and the untapped potential of Dibrugarh district. Hongtong’s visit comes at a crucial time as both nations seek to strengthen bilateral ties, particularly in sectors that can drive economic growth. On her arrival, she was accorded a warm welcome by DC Bikram Kairi and joint director of tourism Hridoy Ranjan Das.
The discussions centered around various themes, including the development of tourism infrastructure, promotion of cultural exchanges and the establishment of direct trade links between Dibrugarh and Thai businesses. The officials also explored possibilities for joint ventures in sectors like tea production, which is vital to the economy of Assam, and ecotourism, capitalising on the region’s lush landscapes and biodiversity. Representatives from the tea industry and Eastern Assam Chambers of Commerce also expressed their support for increased collaboration with Thailand, citing the mutual benefits of sharing expertise, technology and resources.
The meeting saw the participation of key officials, including additional district commissioner Ashim Borgohain, assistant commissioner Nilakshi Bhuyan and tourism development officers Manab Das and Nayanmoni Payegam. Officials of the Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited, Oil India Limited and Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited were also present. “The Thai ambassador spoke about the need for increased cooperation in the tourism sector, citing the historic ties between the Tai-Phake community of Dibrugarh and the people of Thailand as a potential area for promoting tourism and cultural exchange.
