Tesco customers who shop at smaller ‘local’ convenience stores could save money by swapping to Sainsbury’s thanks to a little known Nectar Card rule. While Tesco is generally cheaper than Sainsbury’s in consumer magazine Which?’s guide to supermarket prices, if you use corner shop stores and you don’t want to sign up to a loyalty card - like a Tesco Clubcard or a Sainsbury’s Nectar Card - then you might actually save money by shopping at Sainsbury’s. Both the Tesco Clubcard and the Sainsbury’s Nectar card somewhat controversially offer ‘loyalty card discounts’ on various items, with a Clubcard Price or a Nectar Card price on various food and drink items each month, sometimes with significant discounts for card holders.
But while Tesco puts its Clubcard Price items in its local shops like Tesco Extra, Sainsbury’s does not currently offer Nectar Card Prices in its smaller Sainsbury’s Local stores. That means that shoppers can get the same prices as Nectar Card offers in Sainsbury’s Local - without having a Nectar card. Consumer magazine Which? Said: “The average price difference without a Tesco Clubcard was 10 percent, but much less - 5 percent - for Sainsbury’s customers without a Nectar card.
“This is because some offers that were branded as member-only Nectar prices in larger stores were available to everyone in Local stores, due to Sainsbury’s Locals not currently running loyalty discounts. “So if you’re not keen on joining supermarke.
