Terry L. Shannon, 76, of Dubuque, died Saturday, September 14, 2024, at his home in Dubuque, with his family by his side. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 19, 2024 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Terry will be at 10:00 am on Friday, September 20, 2024, at Church of the Nativity with Msgr. James Miller as the Celebrant. Entombment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.

Terry was born on June 28, 1948, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Joseph and Imelda (Pelzer) Shannon. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School. Terry was united in marriage to Doris “Dory” Elgin on October 18, 1969 at Church of the Nativity.

He worked for Unique Balance and retired from John Deere. Terry’s gentle and kind nature put family and friends at ease. Those close to him remember him as a man who saw the good in everyone.

His number one priority in life was spending time with his family and cherished time spent with his grandchildren. In his younger days, he mastered the art of bowling and pool. His talent in poker and Euchre were unmatched by those around him.

Terry shared his passion of fishing with those close to him. You couldn’t go fishing with Terry, without leaving with a story you are sure to share for years to come. Terry and his friend Ronnie spent many days fishing but they often shared so many laughs and beers that they caught a buzz instead of fish.

Every grandchild has a favorite Papa fishing story they love to tell. Though all the stories are different, they all end in tears of laughter. His memory will forever stay alive in these stories.

For the last two decades, Terry’s heart belonged to Deer Run Resort in Elkader, Iowa. His campsite and it’s beautiful scenery, became his happy place. Terry cherished the time he spent there with a very close group of friends who became his camping family.

Golfing was a pastime Terry enjoyed, not for his skill on the course but for the time spent with his son-in-law, Steve. As much as he loved his time on the greens, his favorite part was the 19th hole. Terry loved nothing more than spending time with those he cared about.

Those people include his loving wife of 55 years, Doris “Dory”; three children, Tracy (Steve) Grant, Brian (Angie Droessler) Shannon, and Brad (Stephanie) Shannon; seven grandchildren, Megan Grant, Haylee Kiernan, Owynn Shannon, Cooper Shannon, Sophia Shannon, Serena Shannon, and Joey Shannon; three bonus grandchildren, Jeff (Heather) Grant and their two children, Abby and Tyson, Danny (Shawna) Grant, and Tracy Grant; his mother-in-law, Zita Elgin; and sister-in-law, Kathy (Bill) Boleyn. Besides his parents, Terry was preceded in death by two siblings, Robert (June) Shannon and Patty (Davey) Koehler; his father-in-law, Larry Elgin; and two good friends, Buck and Wayne. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to the Terry L.

Shannon Memorial Fund. The family would like to extend a special Thank You to Hospice of Dubuque, especially Buffy, and Dr. Tom Schreiber and his nurse, Laurie, for the care they gave Terry.

Also, to good friends Ron and Pattie Coates, Char Pregler, and Tom and Kathy Feldman, thank you doesn’t seem to be enough for how much we appreciate all that you did to help us all these last few years but, from the bottom of our hearts, Thank You. “Goodnight, sweet dreams, I love you.” A photo tribute can be viewed and condolences sent to the family by visiting Terry’s obituary at www.
