Pune: The 17-year-old Porsche Taycan driver had come to the Pune regional transport office ( RTO ) for 15 days last month to learn about aspects related to safe driving . Sources in the RTO told TOI that only a handful of officials were made aware of his visits. “His training is over now.

His last day was around 22-23 days ago. We followed the instructions given by the court (Juvenile Justice Board). We made sure that his privacy was protected,” an official, who did not want to be named, said.



Two young software engineers had died at Kalyaninagar around 2.30 am on May 19 when the teenager , who is the son of a city-based builder, rammed the high-end car into their bike while he was returning home in Wadgaon Sheri after partying with friends at two pubs in Mundhwa. The minor was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) which granted him bail on conditions, including a 300-word essay on road safety and a 15-day training on road safety at the RTO.

The RTO had cancelled the temporary licence given to the car and had said that the teenager would not be issued a driving licence until he turned 25. “The teenager was shown all kinds of work done at the RTO on a day-to-day basis. Also, he was made to learn and understand the different road signs, their meanings, and was told about different aspects and the importance of road safety.

There were some field visits too as part of the training programme. The boy was curious to learn and he obediently attended our lectures and instructions. He had questions too about the practical implementation of road safety rules and safe driving ways etc.

, which were explained to him. We showed him the process of vehicle registration, the process of getting a learner and permanent licence, etc.,” the official pointed out.

Following the JJB’s bail order, the Pune police had approached the board for a review, and the teenager was on May 21 sent to an observation home. His paternal aunt then moved the Bombay high court, which on June 25 ordered the minor’s release from the observation home. The HC had, however, said that the conditions imposed upon him by the JJB’s bail order dated May 19 shall continue to govern him.
