Matthew Shaw, 27, was holidaying in Cornwall in August of 2021 with his wife Davina, when he saw their entire £3,500 bank account drained. Leaving just £20 behind, it now appears that a Romanian hacker was behind the scam and used the ill-gotten funds to pay for a luxury hotel and drinks tab.
Matthew and his wife had just begun their two week trip to south western tip of England when he began to receive notifications on his phone from his bank, First Direct. The notifications read that a £3,500 transaction had been made for a hotel stay, without a name or location provided. Leaving his wife in tears, Matthew had to cut short their holiday there and then, with over a week of their trip still remaining.
