Tuesday, August 27, 2024 Travelers planning to visit Ilocos Norte should be aware of the recent temporary closure of Tanap-Avis Falls, a popular tourist spot in Burgos, due to safety concerns following a flash flood incident that left 19 tourists stranded. This unexpected event has prompted local authorities to take immediate action to ensure the safety of visitors, which will likely have implications for both the travel industry and those planning to explore the area. Temporary Closure and Safety Measures On Tuesday, the local government of Burgos decided to temporarily close Tanap-Avis Falls after 19 tourists from Piddig town were stranded by a flash flood late Monday afternoon.

This was the first time such an incident had been reported in the area, raising concerns about the safety of visitors, particularly during the rainy season. Burgos Mayor Crescente Garcia has instructed that a survey be conducted to identify critical areas around the falls that should be off-limits to tourists. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will lead the survey, which will help in putting up necessary signage in high-risk areas to prevent future incidents.

These proactive measures aim to protect tourists from potential hazards and to ensure that the site remains a safe destination for all. In addition, Emma Luz Martinez-Rico, the municipal disaster risk reduction and management officer, emphasized the need for deploying a lifeguard at the falls, especially during the rainy season when the risk of flash floods is higher. Rico’s recommendation underscores the importance of quick response capabilities in case of emergencies, which could make a significant difference in ensuring the safety of tourists.

Impact on the Travel Industry The temporary closure of Tanap-Avis Falls is likely to affect the travel industry in Ilocos Norte, particularly for those businesses and operators that rely on tourism to this popular site. The falls, which have been a significant attraction in the municipality, had previously received a PHP3 million investment from the local government for the improvement of access roads, comfort rooms, and a tourism deck. These developments were part of a broader effort to enhance the visitor experience and to attract more tourists to the region.

The incident at Tanap-Avis Falls highlights the need for travelers worldwide to be aware of the potential risks associated with visiting natural sites, particularly during adverse weather conditions. As climate change continues to influence weather patterns, the frequency of extreme weather events such as flash floods may increase, posing challenges for tourist safety in various destinations. Looking ahead, the future of Tanap-Avis Falls as a tourist destination will depend on the successful implementation of the safety measures currently being developed.

The falls, which are part of a watershed forest reserve under the National Integrated Protected Areas System of the DENR-Protected Area and Wildlife Bureau, hold significant ecological and cultural importance. Through Proclamation 803, signed during the administration of President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr.

on February 1, 1971, the area covering 41 hectares was declared one of the important river systems in northern Luzon. The local and provincial governments, in collaboration with the DENR and the Protected Area Management Board, have committed to improving the site while ensuring its protection. The tripartite agreement signed in 2022 for the improvement of Tanap-Avis Falls underscores the dedication to maintaining this natural treasure as a safe and accessible destination for tourists.
