Cathy Hughes, who was in her 60s, will be laid to rest on Thursday following the tragic incident at Old Head Beach, near Louisburgh in Co Mayo, shortly after 4pm last Sunday. Ms Hughes who lived in the Galway town of Salthill after growing up in Westport will be reposing at home on Wednesday, July 24 from 5pm to 7.30pm.



Removal on Thursday will arrive at the Church of Christ the King, Salthill in advance of Requiem Mass at 2pm. Her death notice on RIP.ie reads: “Cathy (Cathriona Cecilia) Hughes, Boathaven, Dun Na Carraige, Salthill, Galway / Westport, Co Mayo, July 21, 2024.

“Predeceased by her parents Máire (née Kelly) and Pádraig Hughes, daughter Máire Cristín Greene, brother Seamus Hughes, nephew Pádraig Hughes, sisters-in-law Deirdre Hughes (née Greene) and Kim Hughes (née Ryan) and brothers-in-law Stephen Cassidy and Johnny Gorman.” The notice adds that: “Cathy will be dearly missed by her children William and Isabelle Greene, daughter-in-law Anne Carey, son-in-law Seán Treacy, grandchildren Pierce, Abby, Honora and Imogen. “Deeply cherished by her sisters Anne (Joe) McGovern, Marion Hughes, Orla (Eamonn) O’Carroll and Eleanor (Kevin) Moran; brothers Cathal, Patrick (Olive), Harry, Owen (Karen), Richard (Jean), Vincent and Declan (Catherine) Hughes; sister-in-law Maria Hughes; Ronnie Greene as well as all the wider Hughes, Kelly and Greene families, and her many friends.

May her gentle soul rest in peace.” The Galway Hooker Brewery paid a tribute to Cathy whose “creativity and vibrant spirit left an indelible mark on all of us” in a Facebook post. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends, during this incredibly difficult time.

Her creativity and vibrant spirit left an indelible mark on all of us.

“Cathy’s artistic legacy will continue to inspire and influence the arts community for years to come. We are grateful for the time we had to work with her and for the beautiful contributions she made to our shared project.” It adds: “Her memory will live on through her art and the many lives she touched.

Galway Hooker Secret Session will be closed until Wednesday the 24th at 3.30pm.” In the condolences of her notice on RIP.

May she enjoy the eternal light of heaven.” Another adds that they are: “Beyond shocked and saddened to learn of Cathy's sudden death. May she rest in peace.

“Always glamourous, elegant and full of fun, a hugely talented artist and a lady whose company always brought me a smile and a laugh. “My deepest sympathies to Cathy's children and grandchildren, the Hughes and Greene Family, and to the Kelly family also.” Another has written: “It is with great sadness that I learn of the sad passing of Cathy.

It was many a lively chat and laugh we had wherever and whenever we got together. “Her warm smile and genuine soul will be sadly missed. She was an angel and is with the angels now.

Sincerest condolences to the extended Hughes and Greene family.”.
